Australia vs England – The Ashes LIVE: England get demolished in first innings – but high

Three dots from Archer to start before Smith gets off the mark to a huge cheer, steering one through the off side to relieve some of the crushing pressure that has been building up since Weatherald’s dismissal.

A nasty, rearing ball follows, jamming Labuschagne, who spanks the final ball to the rope for Australia’s first boundary.

Here’s Richard Gibson’s take…

Huge cheers from the home crowd as Australia finally score a run – from the 28th ball they faced.

Steve Smith’s jabbed single Into the off side off an electric Jofra Archer breaks the shackles.

Australia’s stand-in captain is in at No 3, after Marnus Labuschagne was promoted to open with Usman Khawaj feeling unwell.

By the way, Jake Weatherald’s second ball duck meant both teams were 0-1 in the first innings of an Ashes Test for the first time.
